ANIMATION: Setting things into motion.
ANIMATION CLASS: Moving the world, one frame at a time.
Digital Thaumatropes: based on a toy dating back to 1827. Thaumatropes were the first conscious play with the Persistence of Vision, a newly discovered phenomenon in which the retina of the eye retains an image for 1/20 of a second longer than a visual stimulus lasts. So, if an image is replaced with a newer one within that time, the image on the retina will overlap the new image, combining to form one image.

In the early 1800s, these two images were placed on the opposite sides of a disc, which were then rapidly flipped back and forth with a string. Here, we do this with a little help from an algorithm, and two slides created by my Animation students. Enjoy!
